Coromandel Coastal Survey – Coastal Report

Since the mid to late 1960s, the Hauraki Catchment Board and Regional Water Board have had concerns about coastal problems such as beach erosion, sand extraction, subdivision set-back distances, siltation of harbours, and stormwater or other pipelines in the littoral zone on the Coromandel Peninsula. Purpose: To outline the types of problems evident and the work considered necessary to control or overcome coastal Coromandel problems.

Beach profiles and maps for 27 beaches along the eastern coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, including comments. Historic documentation of erosion problems and remedial measures. Calculation of setbacks, maps of sections at risk, economic appraisal of buildings within setback distances. Discussion of sand mining. Inventory of estuaries and mangroves. Conservation techniques and management of dunes.

Onshore surveying was undertaken using Wild NK2 level, Zeis Automatic level, and Wild T1 theodolite. Concrete blocks were buried 0.2m below ground surface, associated with buildings, fences, boundary pegs. Usually a painted warratah was also used to indicate the survey point. Offshore profiles were sounded using a DE-719B Fathometer fitted to a Hamilton jet 85. Soundings were between 800m to 1400m offshore and proceeded landwards at a constant speed of 1800rpm. Dutch method for estimating volume of sand per square metre of beach. Semi quantitative estimation of development setback after Healy (1980). The inventory of estuaries uses the questionnaire and topological information gathered by McLay (1976) on the status and origin of estuaries, and Chapman (1979) survey of mangroves of the South Auckland land district for the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
