Wave model – ARC inshore model
1. Identification information
Status
Draft
Data Collection Date
Summary
To look at the processes that affect waves during storm events and develop a wave climate for New Zealand
Purpose:
For Auckland Regional Council to build on general info for coastal management.
Content
Hindcast wave conditions based on the 20 year model simulation.
Study Types
- Inventory/Survey
Categories
- Coastal Hazards
2. Contact information
Commissioning Agencies
- Auckland Regional Council
Contact Organisations
- NIWA (Hamilton)
3. Spatial information
Geographic Coverage
New Zealand wide
Grid Coordinates
Locations
4. Data acquisition information
Collection Date
1979-1998 data.
Methodology
Climate model for the Hauraki Gulf using inputs from the Hindcast deepwater wave model (> 1 km offshore conditions) based on 1979-1998 simulated waves from wind data from ECMWF, and local inshore wind data.
Frequency of collection:
every 3 hours
5. Data quality information
Known Limitations
Deep water simulation so doesn't take into account shallow water refraction and diffraction.
Gaps in collection:
None
Attribute accuracy:
Inshore calibrations for many hindcast sites. Nearest wave buoys for Waikato Region are Maui on West Coast. Mokohinau (ARC) still operating. Katikati buoy operating from 1991-95.
6. Distribution information
Format
electronic, papers
Digital Format:
binary form can be processed to ASCI
Applications
Hazard predictions
Coastal management – housing/structure setbacks
Availability
Can request site specific data plus some summary data (mean wave height). Contact NIWA for full data.
Sensitivity/Confidentiality:
See NIWA
7. Status information
Data Status
Ongoing
8. Metadata information
General Notes
Additional comments:
Forecast model in development based on predicted atmospheric conditions (wind) NOAA NCEP Ocean Modeling Branch (which is wind predictions) plus atmospheric modeling.
