Estuarine Sedimentation in the Waikato Region

Estuary sedimentation is a continual natural process. However, in many instances the activities on the land within a catchment lead to accelerated estuarine sedimentation. A number of reports have been prepared that summarise previous research on estuarine sedimentation in the Waikato Region. These reports provide descriptions of how estuarine sedimentation occurs and the methodologies that can be employed to evaluate rates of sedimentation. In addition, the available information on sedimentation rates and calculations of the sediment yield of estuaries within the Waikato region are presented. These documents will be updated as information comes to hand in the future. The latest report also discusses the historic rates in comparison with the formulation of a historic baseline sedimentation rate, and how recent rates compare with national guidance for current sedimentation rates.
