Coromandel Harbour - Assessment of Environmental Values and Effects

Various data collected and studies undertaken to assess the potential environmental impact of a large marina proposed in Coromandel Harbour, adjacent to the Whangarahi Stream. Hearing was held in November 1999. A range of studies were undertaken as part of the assessment of environmental effects. The assessment provides a detailed description of the geography and history of the area. There are also numerous planning and engineering assessments undertaken by the consultants acting for the applicant. A range of evidence was also prepared by a number of specialists in opposition to the application (many commissioned by Department of Conservation). The assessment and expert evidence provides a detailed review of existing information and discusses some new data collection.

Studies and evidence given included: Report: Betts, A. & Raudkivi, A. 1999: Possible improved boat access to the Whangarahi Stream. Prepared for Coromandel Waterways Ltd. Includes an assesment of the hydrodynamics and sedimentation of the area and the likely effect of the proposed works on these processes. Biological evidence (Kennedy), including a description of the ecosystems, habitats, vegetation, conservation values and birds. Monitoring of bird species Sept-Nov 1999 by Gilbert James. Biological assessment included benthic community assessments through collection of sediment samples. Landscape and natural character assessment. Suspended sediment (water) samples collected on five occasions between March and May 1996. Surface floats to measure water movements (grapefruit) for 2hrs20mins. Water level measurements 32 hrs. Report on ecosystem valuation, including a calculation of direct and indirect values for ecosystem types in the Waikato Region, and an estimation of the total annual value of ecosystem services. Many others not described, including detailed policy analysis. Review by experts in opposition, including discussion of seagrass values.
