Summary
Assessments evaluated the impact of the cable on the seabed (biological impacts) and required burial depths to avoid adverse impacts on fishing activity (possible disturbance of cable and associated hazard to fishing). The assessment also considered the burial depth required at ocean beaches such as Ngaranui, where the cable was to be brought onto land. Hearing was held in November 2000. All evidence presented by ASR Ltd (for the applicant) was also reviewed by NIWA. Data was collected and evaluated to determine the environmental impact of placing a cable into the seabed off the West Coast of the North Island and of bringing the cable ashore at Ruapuke and Ngaranui Beaches (Raglan).
Content
Sidescan sonar and bathymetric mapping of seabed. Various planning and engineering assessments are included in evidence prepared by the applicant. Description of the morphology of the cable route (including bedforms and possible cable exposure) and landing zones (Ngaranui Beach). Sediment samples taken and analysed from Ruapuke and Ngaranui Beaches. A brief assessment of climate change included. Intertidal biological survey 29/07/2000. Six faunal samples.
