Auckland Regional Council - Identifying aquaculture management areas
1. Identification information
Status
Complete
Data Collection Date
Summary
This dataset includes results of Stage 1 of a two-stage process for defining AMAs. Stage 1 information and constraints mapping is intended to provide a platform for focused consultation. A more detailed assessment of selected areas of lower constraint will be carried out in Stage 2. The dataset extends into the Firth of Thames.
Purpose:
To distinguish areas of the Coastal Marine Area where future marine farming would face greatest conflict.
Content
Discussion, metadata and GIS layers (where information available) of the potential constraints to marine farming activities:
Commercial fishing and shipping activities,
recreational pursuits including fishing and pleasure boating,
resource consented activities including existing marine farming and sand dredging,
navigation and safety issues,
visual amenity values,
human health issues,
cultural and heritage values,
water quality, and
areas of ecological value and sensitivity.

4. Data acquisition information
Collection Date
2002
Methodology
Available information on constraints was collected and a brief description of each provided. Constraints were categorised by the degree of restriction they impose upon future marine farming activities. Any constraints categorised as less than 'absolute' or 'critical' were not considered further in Stage 1. Constraints were then amalgamated into composite maps by category to allow patterns of constraint on a study-wide basis to become apparent.
Frequency of collection:
will be updated as information becomes available.
5. Data quality information
Known Limitations
based on available information. Various knowledge gaps identified. Fishing data, especially recreational and customary, is not complete. Does not replace the requirement to undertake site-specific assessments of environmental effects or monitoring of relevant to individual marine farming consent applications.
Gaps in collection:
Various, GIS layers compiled where information available.
Data quality:
Varies depending on source. Need to review.
Attribute accuracy:
Variable
Completeness:
Not reported
