Summary
Purpose:
The North Island Maui’s dolphin, is estimated to have a population of around 111 individuals and is ranked as nationally critical by DOC and critically endangered by the IUCN. While there is uncertainty over trends in population size the South Island and West Coast North Island there is some evidence of overall population decline at a species level as well as within individual populations. The aim of this work is to estimate the number of North Island Hector's dolphins.
