Summary
The Protected Natural Areas Programme (PNAP) is a scientifically based programme that aims to preserve the full range of New Zealand's natural character and ecological diversity. It arose from an awareness and concern that many of our indigenous communities, habitat and landscapes were inadequately represented within the existing network of reserves and other protected natural areas and that many of these were under threat of disappearing forever.
Purpose:
To identify the range of vegetation/habitat types currently protected and recommended areas for protection (RAPs) where habitat is under-represented in protected areas.
Content
Overview of the Ecological Region, vegetation surveys, areas recommended for protection (RAPs) – including map, grid reference, area, altitude range, tenure, land form, vegetation, significant features, and justification for protection.

4. Data acquisition information
Collection Date
Coromandel ER surveyed over the summers of 1987-88 and 1988-89.
Methodology
See the PNAP Guidebook for Rapid Ecological Survey (Myers et al, 1987).
Involves 4 stages – reconnaissance, survey, analysis, and evaluation/implementation.
Ecological units which now occur within PNAs at less than 10% of their probable former extent were considered to be inadequately protected.
Frequency of collection:
One off survey
5. Data quality information
Known Limitations
Rapid surveys so possibility that species overlooked.
Gaps in collection:
Not reported
Data quality:
Not reported
Attribute accuracy:
Field surveys carried out by specialists trained in various ecological fields (botany, freshwater).
