Summary
This inventory of important wetland sites in New Zealand was initiated as part of a joint venture between Wetlands International, the Ramsar Bureau and the South Pacific Regional Environmental Programme.
Purpose:
To compile an inventory of the most important wetland sites in New Zealand.
Content
Wetlands known or thought to be of greatest importance from the point of view of nature conservation are grouped according to Department of Conservation Conservancies. The site descriptions include basic information on size and location, physical features, ecological features, ownership, degree of protection, land use, threats and conservation values. Freshwater and estuarine wetlands are included. Coastal wetlands within the Waikato Conservancy are the Waikato River mouth and estuary, Firth of Thames, and Kawhia Harbour.

Contributors were requested to submit their information on standard wetland data sheets developed for the use in the Oceania Wetland Inventory. Contributors filled out the data sheets using the best available information.
