Data Collection Date
1990 - present
Summary
Water level measurements enable storm surges, tidal amplitude and phase and seiche period to be measured, and tidal and storm surge statistics calculated.
There are currently four tide gauges maintained by the Waikato Regional Council - Whitianga (1999), Tararu (1990), Kawhia and Raglan.
This allows a complete tidal analysis and a thorough comparison of storm surge with Moturiki Island.
To identify long term sea level trends and expected extreme sea levels.
Content
Whitianga: July 1999 - present. 1-5 minute sampling interval.
Tararu ("Thames Tide"): May 1990 - present. 1-7.5 minute sampling interval.
Kawhia Wharf: August 2008 - present. 1-2 minute sampling interval.
Raglan Wharf:

Frequency of collection:
Continuous, interval dependent on site.
5. Data quality information
Known Limitations
Large gaps affect data analysis. Tides at Tararu are amplified because of the relatively shallow waters of the Firth and therefore are not representative of other parts of the Firth or the north-eastern coast.
Whitianga Wharf site in shelted Harbour, tides affected.
Tararu: several short term gaps + a gap of 27 days in 1992.
Whitianga: 16/02/2000 @ 06:45:01 to 16/02/2000 @ 13:44:59 = 7 hours
05/07/2000 @ 09:20:01 to 07/07/2000 @ 13:24:59 = 52 hours
17/05/2002 @ 10:15:01 to 20/05/2002 @ 00:04:59 = 62 hours
24/05/2002 @ 09:15:01 to 24/05/2002 @ 13:09:59 = 4 hours
26/05/2002 @ 18:10:01 to 26/05/2002 @ 20:09:59 = 2 hours
15/09/2002 @ 06:10:01 to 15/09/2002 @ 08:09:59 = 2 hours
Data quality:
1 mm resolution - gaps and problems with data reported in relevant technical publications.
Completeness:
Gaps and bad data noted in data reports, including several short term gaps, a gap of 27 days in 1992, and a period of instrument malfunction.
