Coastal Structure Data Set
1. Identification information
Status
Complete
Data Collection Date
1995/1996
Summary
This dataset contains details collected during a survey of all coastal structures in the Region. An inventory of coastal structures is required in order to regulate them as required under the Resource Management Act. A survey was undertaken during the summer of 1994/5. All structures were included in the survey, including coastal protection structures, navigation markers, jetties, public access points, fences and network utility structures.
Purpose:
To determine where coastal structures are in the Waikato Region.
Content
The data set lists coastal structures, their location, owner, description, type (culvert, wall, outlet, ramp etc.), and condition. Approximately 2800 structures were identified. Some more recent data collected in just some locations, including electronic data collection on northern Coromandel Peninsula.

4. Data acquisition information
Collection Date
summer of 1994/95.
Methodology
Physical inspection of all coastal structure in the region. The structures were located on NZMS base maps, scale 1:25,000.
Information on the data collected can be found in EW DOCS#637369 – Coastal Structure Data Set – Scope and Requirements.
Frequency of collection:
single survey, plus partial updates
5. Data quality information
Known Limitations
Not reported. Structures were located using hard copy maps, so the locational data has a reasonably high error.
Gaps in collection:
Not reported. Some errors have been identified. Some structures not surveyed due to changes in beach level - i.e. coastal protection structures buried under sand.
Data quality:
Data has been quality checked on entry to Excel.
Attribute accuracy:
N/A
Completeness:
The data will be updated in future surveys, probably on a harbour by harbour basis and entered into Excel Spreadsheet and then transferred to an MS Access Warehouse and then Geomedia Pro. The data can then be transferred into other GIS formats if required. Some ommissions are known. Data collection was undertaken over a summer period by students, and some coastal protection structures were omitted from the survey, possibly because they were partially buried in sand (e.g. Buffalo and Cooks Beach seawalls).
6. Distribution information
Format
digital, maps, colour photographs
Digital Format:
MS Excel
Applications
To monitor the presence of coastal structures. Also will both aid and monitor the implementation of the regional coastal plan.
Availability
Publicly available
Sensitivity/Confidentiality:
No restrictions
7. Status information
Data Status
The data will be updated following future surveys.
8. Metadata information
General Notes
The RMA requires that structures situated in the coastal marine area have consent unless categorised as a permitted activity. The Coastal Structure Database enables decisions to be made regarding the issuing of consents and the allowing of activities.
