Coromandel Coast Wetland Inventory

This project identifies coastal wetlands from maps and aerial photographs. It includes information concerning their current state, value and associated threats. This information is interpreted to determine significance, management priorities, restoration and protection potential. Purpose: To identify coastal wetlands in the Coromandel (~ Ecological Region), and highlight values/threats to these wetlands.

Coastal wetlands are defined as areas of permanent or seasonal waterlogging, formed exclusively due to the presence of coastal features and/or current coastal processes. 73 coastal wetlands (north from Thames and Waihi Beach) are identified for which 'natural character', 'intactness', 'riparian vegetation', and 'vulnerability' are rated to give a management and priority score. Individual wetland reports with associated scores are saved onto CD, along with associated reference material found during the study.

Initial wetland identification is from topographic maps, with secondary identification from aerial photographs (scales not given in report) and other map sources. Historical extent of wetland determined using past and present aerial photographs and surrounding soil types. Degree of modification estimated from aerial photographs. Frequency of collection: One off project

No field surveys were undertaken. Wetland inclusion is limited by initial identification from topographic maps. Area is calculated from aerial photographs (rectified?) or old data. Determination of historical extent is dependant on availability of photographs and coarse scaled soil maps. The scoring systems to rank wetland value and threats are based on personal judgment. Data quality: Identified parameters/criteria used to determine ranking scores. Attribute accuracy: Scores are not based on current field inspections. Area coverage not determined with GPS. The existence of threatened species is reliant on previous site studies. Completeness: Significance' and 'ownership' data fields are not filled in.
